"Lupin III: The Legend of the Gold of Babylon", Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1985, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O269
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1985 for the cinematic feature Lupin III: The Legend of the Gold of Babylon from Tokyo Movie Shinsha (TMS). Set largely in New York, the caper hurls Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, Fujiko, and ever-pursuing Inspector Zenigata into a scramble for the fabled treasure of ancient Babylon—blending series hallmark slapstick with occult mystery and mafia intrigue. Scored by Yūji Ōno, the film sits at the wild, pop-art edge of the franchise’s 1980s output and remains a cult favorite with Lupin collectors.
Film background
Developed from Monkey Punch’s characters, the movie riffs on heist-film grammar—car chases, double-crosses, and globe-hopping clues—while leaning into the era’s neon palette and NYC fixation. Its eccentric tone and set-pieces (ziggurat visions, UFO gags, and Madison Avenue mayhem) make it one of the most stylistically distinctive entries of the long-running series.
Poster design
A punchy collage keyed to bold anime color: Lupin (pink jacket period) and Fujiko dominate center, posed back-to-back—her pistol raised—while a spiral “Babylon” motif recedes behind them like a heist target. Explosions, tanks, and flying craft tear across a futuristic Manhattan skyline; in the margins appear the ensemble rogues’ gallery (Jigen lounging, Goemon poised, Zenigata marshalling the chase). The oversized, bevelled title 「バビロンの黄金伝説」 blasts across the footer above the ルパン三世 series mark and TMS/Toho release credits, with a mid-field tagline promising an “exciting battle” from ancient Mesopotamia to modern New York.
