“Mars Attacks!” (マーズ・アタック!), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1997, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) T286

Sale price $215.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster produced for the 1997 first Japanese theatrical release of Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks! Originally released in America in 1996, the film reached Japanese cinemas through Warner Bros. in March 1997. The prominent “1997 MARCH” announcement along the bottom places this sheet within that original Japanese campaign.

Film background
Inspired by the 1962 Topps trading cards, Mars Attacks! combines the imagery of 1950s alien-invasion films with Burton’s mischievous humour and taste for the grotesque. Humanity welcomes visitors from Mars, only to discover that their assurances of peaceful intentions conceal a gleefully destructive invasion.

With a screenplay by Jonathan Gems and music by Danny Elfman, the film turns the spectacular destruction of a disaster movie into an anarchic comedy. Its enormous ensemble cast and distinctive Martian designs have helped make it a favourite among fans of Burton’s stranger, darker work.

Poster design
The composition is filled with seemingly endless rows of enlarged green Martian brains, diminishing into the distance. One alien peers out near the lower right, its bulging eyes and orange forehead interrupting the hypnotic pattern with a perfectly timed visual joke.

The enormous red MARS ATTACKS! title cuts diagonally across the lower section. Immediately above it, the Japanese tagline 「地・球・ヲ・イ・タ・ダ・キ」 declares, approximately, “We’ll take the Earth!”

Five framed portraits beneath the title feature Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, and Danny DeVito, echoing their prominently printed names across the top. The vivid green imagery and red lettering give this design tremendous impact, capturing the film’s mixture of menace and absurdity.

Condition
Excellent. Small pinholes near the corners and light handling wear are visible. The detailed artwork and strong colours retain excellent display appeal, and the poster will look striking framed.
