“Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” (風の谷のナウシカ), Original Japanese Promotional Poster 1984, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) H284
This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster issued in 1984 for Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (風の谷のナウシカ), written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Although often grouped with Studio Ghibli, the film was in fact produced before Ghibli’s formal founding, with animation by Topcraft, and later became closely associated with Ghibli through Miyazaki’s authorship and the studio’s subsequent stewardship of his work. Based on Miyazaki’s manga serialised in Animage, the film features the voices of Sumi Shimamoto, Gorō Naya, Yoshiko Sakakibara, and Ichirō Nagai.
This particular poster is especially important and extremely scarce, as it was produced to promote Animage magazine and was not commercially sold to the public. The artwork is unique to this issue and differs from the standard Japanese theatrical designs used for the film’s cinema campaign. As such, it is best understood as a rare, original Animage promotional poster from the year of the film’s first release.
Film background
Released in 1984, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind stands as one of the foundational works of modern Japanese animation. Set in a future world devastated by ecological collapse, industrial warfare, and the spread of a toxic jungle, the story follows Princess Nausicaä, a compassionate yet courageous young leader who tries to reconcile humanity with the natural world rather than destroy it.
The film was adapted from Miyazaki’s own manga, which began serialisation in Animage in 1982. That connection makes this poster particularly appealing: it links the finished film directly back to the magazine that first introduced the story to readers. Nausicaä is now rightly regarded as one of the key works that paved the way for the creation of Studio Ghibli in 1985, and for Miyazaki’s emergence as one of the defining filmmakers in world animation.
Poster design
The design is striking in its simplicity. Against a broad, uncluttered cream ground, the composition presents a large, clean portrait of Nausicaä in soft pale blue, with Teto, her loyal fox-squirrel companion, perched on her shoulder. The image is rendered in a refined, minimal graphic style that feels both delicate and immediately recognisable.
Unlike the richer, more atmospheric theatrical illustrations associated with the film, this design has a magazine-promotion clarity: bold, clean outlines; flat, elegant colour fields; and a strong emphasis on character iconography. The small Animage logo in the upper corner confirms the poster’s promotional identity, while the title at lower right anchors the sheet without distracting from the central portrait. It is an exceptionally attractive design and one of the most charming Nausicaä images in poster form.
Rarity
Extremely rare. This is not a standard commercial or theatrical issue, but a special Animage promotional poster produced in 1984 and not available for sale at the time of issue. Posters of this type surface only infrequently, and this example represents a particularly desirable piece for collectors of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, and rare Japanese anime promotional material.
