“Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” (風の谷のナウシカ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1984, Very Rare, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q259
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1984 for the first release of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (風の谷のナウシカ), written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The film was animated by Topcraft, distributed theatrically in Japan by Toei, and features music by Joe Hisaishi.
Although released before Studio Ghibli was officially founded in 1985, Nausicaä is widely regarded as the foundational work that led directly to the creation of the studio, and it remains an essential part of the Ghibli / Miyazaki canon.
This is a very rare original 1984 theatrical B2 poster, not a later shop poster or modern reproduction.
Film background
Released in 1984, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is one of the defining works of modern Japanese animation. Adapted from Miyazaki’s own manga, the film is set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity survives on the edge of the toxic Sea of Decay. At its centre is Princess Nausicaä, whose compassion, courage, and ability to understand the natural world set her apart from the warring kingdoms around her.
The film’s ecological vision, emotional depth, and extraordinary world-building made it a landmark on release. It also established the creative partnership between Hayao Miyazaki and Joe Hisaishi, one of the most important director-composer collaborations in Japanese cinema.
Poster design
This dynamic Japanese B2 design is one of the most dramatic original campaign images for the film. Nausicaä charges forward on her giant bird-mount, with Teto perched behind her, while aircraft and gliders roar overhead and the vast forms of the Toxic Jungle fill the background.
The central image is dominated by the enormous, many-eyed Ohmu (王蟲), its blue eye-like facets glowing with otherworldly intensity. Above and around it are flying machines, insects, spores, and dense jungle forms, creating a rich visual summary of the film’s world.
Across the centre, the sweeping copy reads:
「少女の愛が奇跡を呼んだ。」
“A girl’s love called forth a miracle.”
At the bottom, the monumental red title 風の谷のナウシカ anchors the composition, with the small NAUSICAA mark printed beneath. The result is a powerful, Japan-only theatrical design: adventurous, emotional, and unmistakably Miyazaki.
