“Orchestra Rehearsal” (オーケストラ・リハーサル), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1980, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) M164

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the 1980 first Japanese release of Federico Fellini’s Orchestra Rehearsal (Prova d’orchestra). Made in 1978 for Italian television, this Italian–West German satire screened out of competition at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival before opening in Japan through France Eigasha as part of its BOW series.

A television crew visits a medieval chapel where an orchestra has gathered to rehearse. The musicians speak fondly about their instruments, each convinced of its particular importance. Once the conductor, played by Balduin Baas, takes the podium, these individual loyalties turn into open revolt. Fellini himself provides the voice of the unseen interviewer.

The Japanese poster plays on the tension between order and disorder. Fine horizontal rules cross a salmon-pink ground, but almost everything placed against them sits at an angle. A large colour photograph shows the string players bowing their instruments amid the rubble of the rehearsal room. Above them, a black-and-white conductor projects sideways into the composition from the right edge, baton in hand, while loose sheets of music appear to fly across the page.

The Japanese title 「オーケストラ・リハーサル」 runs down the left edge in oversized black lettering. Beside it, a narrow blue panel reads 「ニーノ・ロータに捧ぐ」 — “Dedicated to Nino Rota.” The dedication has particular significance: this was Rota’s final collaboration with Fellini. Below the central photograph, the Italian title appears in magenta, tilted to follow the angle of the image.

Very Good / Excellent condition overall. The sheet was previously folded, and subsequently stored flat. The salmon-pink ground retains strong colour, and the oversized lettering remains bold and clear. Once framed, this poster will display excellently.
