“Over the Top” / 「オーバー・ザ・トップ」, Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1987, Sylvester Stallone, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) A291

Sale price $115.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1987 for the first Japanese release of Over the Top, the cult 1980s sports drama starring Sylvester Stallone as truck driver and arm-wrestler Lincoln Hawk.

A classic Stallone vehicle from the Cannon Films era, Over the Top combines road-movie Americana, father-son melodrama, and high-stakes arm-wrestling spectacle. The Japanese poster captures all three elements with exceptional period energy: sweat, trucks, competition, and emotional redemption.

Film background
Directed by Menahem Golan, Over the Top follows Lincoln Hawk, a long-haul truck driver trying to reconnect with his estranged young son while training for a major arm-wrestling championship. The film is remembered for its distinctive blend of action, sentiment, and tournament drama, as well as its emphatic 1980s style.

With music associated with Giorgio Moroder and the unmistakable presence of Sylvester Stallone, the film remains one of the most recognisable American sports dramas of the decade.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 has a bold, highly energetic layout that perfectly reflects the film’s split identity: truck-driving road drama and sweat-drenched arm-wrestling battle.

At centre is a powerful image of Sylvester Stallone in profile, wearing a white athletic tank top and locked in the tension of an arm-wrestling match. His expression and pose convey the film’s central idea of physical struggle as emotional proof.

The bottom section introduces the film’s highway mythology: a convoy of heavy-duty trucks charges across an open American road, with a desert horizon and Interstate 15 North sign reinforcing the cross-country setting. Two inset stills at right show the arm-wrestling tournament and the father-son relationship at the heart of the story.

The large vertical blue-and-white slogan at left reads:

「炎の絆を勝ちとる日まで…俺の戦いは終らない!」
“Until the day I win back our bond of fire… my fight will never end!”

The right-side text amplifies the film’s scale and tournament climax, describing a 5,000-kilometre American journey and a showdown against the strongest arm-wrestling champions.

The lower title treatment is especially strong: シルベスター・スタローン appears in bold gold lettering, with the Japanese title オーバー・ザ・トップ below in huge red characters outlined in white. The original English title OVER THE TOP appears in the upper-right logo area.
