This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1985 for the Japanese re-release of Port of Shadows / Le Quai des Brumes (霧の波止場), Marcel Carné’s 1938 masterpiece of French poetic realism, starring Jean Gabin and Michèle Morgan, with a screenplay by Jacques Prévert.

A landmark of pre-war French cinema, Le Quai des Brumes is one of the defining works of the Carné–Prévert collaboration, admired for its fatalistic atmosphere, romantic melancholy, and beautifully stylised vision of fog, desire, and doomed escape.

Film background
Directed by Marcel Carné, Port of Shadows follows Jean, a military deserter played by Jean Gabin, who arrives in the fogbound port city of Le Havre and becomes involved with Nelly, played by Michèle Morgan. Their fragile connection unfolds in a world of loneliness, crime, fate, and moral exhaustion.

The film is one of the central works of French poetic realism, a movement that shaped world cinema with its blend of everyday settings, heightened atmosphere, working-class fatalism, and tragic romanticism. Gabin’s restrained performance and Morgan’s luminous presence helped make the film one of the great French screen romances of the 1930s.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 presents the film with exceptional refinement. The design is centred on a sepia-toned romantic still of Jean Gabin and Michèle Morgan facing one another, surrounded by a loose painterly border of blue, purple, and red brushwork.

The French title LE QUAI DES BRUMES appears prominently at the top, while the Japanese title 霧の波止場 is printed in large teal lettering across the lower section. A smaller black-and-white street scene at lower left reinforces the film’s misty harbour atmosphere.

The side text highlights the film’s major historical recognition, including its appearance at the 1938 Venice Film Festival, the Prix Méliès, and the 1939 Prix Louis-Delluc. The right-side Japanese copy also positions the film as one of the great Carné–Prévert achievements, celebrated alongside Children of Paradise.

The result is a beautiful Japanese 1985 revival design: spare, literary, romantic, and deeply atmospheric.
