“Rabid” (ラビッド), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1977, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA121
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1977 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Rabid (ラビッド), David Cronenberg’s early body-horror classic starring Marilyn Chambers. Produced in Canada and released at the height of the 1970s horror boom, the film helped establish Cronenberg’s reputation as one of cinema’s most provocative and original genre directors.
Film background
Written and directed by David Cronenberg, Rabid stars Marilyn Chambers, Frank Moore, Joe Silver, and Susan Roman. The story follows a young woman who, after radical experimental surgery following a motorcycle accident, develops a grotesque new organ that spreads a rabies-like plague through Montreal. Fusing infection horror, sexual anxiety, urban panic, and Cronenberg’s uniquely clinical imagination, the film became one of the key early works of modern body horror and remains a cult favourite.
Poster design
This is a superb and highly confrontational original Japanese release design. The composition is dominated by a large image of Marilyn Chambers in visible distress, crouched against a dark ground, immediately conveying the film’s atmosphere of panic and bodily violation. The bold vertical Japanese copy at left and right intensifies the sense of alarm, while the acid-yellow title band across the bottom crashes through the design with tremendous impact. The smaller inset image at lower left and the hazmat-suited figures at lower right reinforce the film’s epidemic theme. It is an exceptionally strong and memorable country-of-origin poster for one of Cronenberg’s most important early films.
