This is an original Japanese B2 poster issued in Japan for the theatrical release of Rhapsody in August (八月の狂詩曲, 1991), Akira Kurosawa’s late-period masterpiece—an intimate, deeply affecting meditation on family memory and the long aftermath of the Nagasaki atomic bombing. Starring Sachiko Murase at the emotional centre and featuring Richard Gere, the film is one of Kurosawa’s most personal works: quiet, human, and morally urgent, with a visual tenderness that contrasts powerfully with its historical weight.
Poster design
A beautiful, minimalist Japanese campaign design dominated by a towering waterfall—a poetic symbol of time, grief, and remembrance. The family scene at the water’s edge anchors the bottom in warm realism, while the upper field remains open and airy, allowing the typography to breathe: the Japanese title 「八月の狂詩曲」 across the top, and the refined credit block including 「黒澤明監督作品」 with the roman title Rhapsody in August. The vertical red copy at left reads like a whispered emotional refrain, adding a subtle sense of melancholy. Exceptionally frame-friendly and one of the most elegant Kurosawa poster designs of the 1990s.
