Released on October 18, 1961, through United Artists, West Side Story received widespread acclaim and became the highest-grossing film of the year. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 10 — including Best Picture — making it the most Oscar-awarded musical of all time.
Recognized as one of the greatest musical films ever made, West Side Story was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." In 2021, a new adaptation directed by Steven Spielberg was released to renewed acclaim.
