“Seven Samurai” (七人の侍), Original Japanese Re-release Movie Poster 1991, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA838
This is an original Japanese B2 poster issued in Japan for the 1991 theatrical re-release of Seven Samurai (七人の侍, 1954), Akira Kurosawa’s monumental masterpiece and one of the most influential films ever made. The 1991 campaign reintroduced Kurosawa’s epic to a new generation as a major cinema event—often tied to renewed screenings and restoration-era promotion—making these early-1990s Japanese re-release posters highly collectible in their own right.
Poster design
A striking, modernist Japanese design that pairs painterly emotion with bold calligraphy. The sheet is dominated by a dynamic watercolour portrait—mud, sweat, and intensity—capturing the raw human force at the heart of Kurosawa’s film. At right, the vertical copy reads 「見るべし!」 (“Must be seen!”) followed by 「最後の劇場ロードショー」 (“The last theatrical roadshow”), positioning this reissue as an unmissable big-screen experience. The title 「七人の侍」 is rendered in huge black brushstroke calligraphy across the lower half, with 「黒澤明監督作品」 beneath. At the bottom, the English line “SEVEN SAMURAI COMING BACK” reinforces the re-release framing. Minimal, powerful, and exceptionally frame-friendly—one of the best Japanese reissue designs for the title.
