“Skin” (SKIN/スキン), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 2018, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA125
This is an original Japanese B2 poster for Skin (SKIN/スキン), Guy Nattiv’s acclaimed drama starring Jamie Bell, Daniel Macdonald, Danielle Macdonald, Vera Farmiga, and Bill Camp. Although the film is a 2019 American production, this country-of-origin Japanese theatrical poster was issued for the film’s Japanese release campaign, which opened in Japan on 26 June 2020.
Film background
Written and directed by Guy Nattiv, Skin is based on the real-life story of Bryon Widner, a former white supremacist trying to escape a world of hatred, violence, and extremist ideology. The film grew out of Nattiv’s Oscar-winning short Skin, and Japanese release materials explicitly positioned the feature in relation to that award-winning short work. Running 118 minutes and released in Japan with an R15+ rating, it is one of the most powerful contemporary films to confront racism, identity, and the possibility of personal transformation.
Poster design
This is a striking and highly effective Japanese theatrical design. The composition is dominated by a close-up of Jamie Bell’s face, half in shadow, with the stark racist tattooing rendered in brutal detail. The vast black field to the right heightens the sense of isolation and psychological tension, while the huge white title at the bottom gives the sheet enormous visual force. The Japanese tagline running vertically at right—asking whether a person can truly be reborn—perfectly matches the film’s subject. It is a memorable, minimalist design that communicates the film’s themes of extremism, shame, and attempted redemption with unusual clarity. The poster image itself shows the photographed B2 example.
