"Son of Godzilla (怪獣島の決戦 ゴジラの息子)", Original Japanese Movie Poster 1967, Toho First Release, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) N162
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1967 for the first theatrical release of Son of Godzilla (怪獣島の決戦 ゴジラの息子), produced and distributed by Toho. First release posters for this title are exceptionally scarce, especially in excellent condition, and are considered among the rarities of Showa-era Godzilla collecting.
Film background
Son of Godzilla was directed by Jun Fukuda with special effects by Sadamasa Arikawa (under Eiji Tsuburaya’s supervision). The film introduced audiences to Minilla (or “Minya”), Godzilla’s offspring, who would become a recurring character in the franchise. The story unfolds on Sollgel Island, where a team of scientists conducting weather experiments inadvertently awakens a colony of giant mantises (Kamacuras) and a giant spider (Kumonga). Godzilla arrives to protect Minilla from the kaiju threats, solidifying its reputation as one of the more unique and family-oriented entries in the series.
Poster design
The artwork captures the chaotic monster battles of the film, with Godzilla and Minilla breathing atomic rays against Kamacuras, while Kumonga looms in the foreground. Bright Showa-era reds, yellows, and blues heighten the poster’s sense of spectacle, with the bold vertical title typography proclaiming “決戦 ゴジラの息子” (Decisive Battle: Son of Godzilla). Inset portraits of the human cast add further drama. A vibrant and dynamic design that reflects both the monster action and the shift toward a younger audience for the franchise.
