“A Chorus Line” / 「コーラスライン」, Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1985, Richard Attenborough, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) A286

Sale price $115.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1985 for the first Japanese release of A Chorus Line, the film adaptation of the landmark Broadway musical, directed by Richard Attenborough.

A sleek and highly displayable Japanese poster, this design draws directly from the celebrated visual identity of the stage production, using a refined black-and-gold theatrical aesthetic to evoke Broadway, audition rooms, stage lights, and the emotional discipline of performance.

Film background
Originally one of the most successful stage musicals in Broadway history, A Chorus Line became a cultural phenomenon before being adapted for the screen in 1985. The film explores the lives, ambitions, disappointments, and vulnerabilities of dancers auditioning for a place in a Broadway chorus line.

Rather than presenting musical theatre as pure glamour, the story focuses on the personal cost of performance: competition, rejection, identity, memory, and the need to be seen. The Japanese campaign presents the film as a major theatrical event, emphasizing both its Broadway pedigree and cinematic scale.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 has a particularly elegant, minimalist composition. The upper two-thirds are dominated by the iconic A CHORUS LINE logo, printed in large gold art-deco-style lettering against a deep black ground. Beneath it, THE MOVIE appears in blue, marking the transition from stage phenomenon to cinema event.

The lower section features the famous audition line: dancers standing shoulder-to-shoulder across a dark stage, illuminated by bright overhead light. Their long shadows stretch dramatically toward the viewer, while the empty red auditorium seats curve behind them in the darkness. It is a beautiful and theatrical image, capturing the central visual metaphor of the film: individual lives briefly exposed under the discipline of the stage.

At the top, the Japanese headline reads:

「★史上最高のムービー・イベント!★」
“The greatest movie event in history!”

The smaller Japanese copy beneath it promotes the film as the complete screen adaptation of the Broadway super-musical that moved millions of viewers, stating that cinema has now gone beyond the stage.

The director credit appears in red:

「リチャード・アッテンボロー監督作品」
“A film directed by Richard Attenborough.”

The Japanese title コーラスライン is printed boldly at the bottom in clean white katakana, giving the poster a strong final anchor.

It is especially attractive because it preserves the iconic identity of the original stage production while adapting it into a distinctly Japanese theatrical-release format. The result is elegant, restrained, and highly suitable for framing.
