Japanese Poster Size Guide — B2, B1, STB, B0 & larger formats

This is an ultra-rare original Japanese STB tatekan poster produced for the 1971 first theatrical release of Stray Cat Rock: Beat ’71, the final instalment in the five-film Stray Cat Rock series. Directed by Toshiya Fujita, the film features Meiko Kaji, Tatsuya Fuji, and Yoshio Harada.

Standing almost five feet tall, this exceptional two-sheet design features a near life-size, full-length image of Meiko Kaji. The elongated format gives her portrait an imposing presence, framed by vivid psychedelic decoration that captures the youthful energy of the period.

This particular example is in Excellent condition. Previously folded and subsequently stored flat. The colours remain beautifully vivid. Please look closely at the additional imagery provided. Once framed, this poster will display excellently.

Film background
Released in Japan on 3 January 1971, Beat ’71 follows a group of Shinjuku hippies whose freedom brings them into conflict with entrenched criminal authority. When one member is forcibly taken home by men working for his powerful father, his girlfriend Furiko, played by Meiko Kaji, is left facing a false murder accusation. Their friends become embroiled in the struggle to reunite the couple.

The Stray Cat Rock films helped establish Kaji’s screen persona, combining youth rebellion, contemporary fashion, music and action. This final entry also marks an early collaboration with Toshiya Fujita, who would subsequently direct her in Lady Snowblood (1973)—a connection that gives the poster particular appeal for collectors following her career.

Poster design
The composition is built around Kaji’s direct gaze and commanding stance. Wearing a broad-brimmed black hat, a long grey dress and a black waist sash, she holds a leather strap between her hands, its sweeping curve cutting across the portrait.

The restrained clothing contrasts with a vibrant border of turquoise blue, green and pink, punctuated by white pinwheel-like motifs. Broad areas of pale background allow the figure to dominate, making especially effective use of the tatekan’s considerable height.

At upper left, 野良猫ロック appears in yellow against black, beside the large red subtitle 暴走集団’71. The advertising copy running down the right reads:

「ヤングのダイニチ新春映画」
“Dainichi’s New Year release for young audiences.”

Cast and production credits occupy the lower section, including Kaji’s name in red, director Toshiya Fujita, and the Dainichi Eihai presentation credit. Together, the portrait, typography and psychedelic border create a striking example of early-1970s Japanese film publicity.

Condition
Excellent condition. Previously folded and subsequently stored flat, with vivid colours. Please review the photos; they show the exact poster for sale, including the front and reverse of both sheets.
