“Stray Cat Rock: Beat ’71” (野良猫ロック 暴走集団’71), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1971, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) J215
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1971 for the first theatrical release of Stray Cat Rock: Beat ’71, the explosive final entry in Nikkatsu’s legendary Stray Cat Rock series. A superb example of early-1970s Japanese youth-action poster design, it combines motorcycles, pop colour, rebellion, glamour, and ensemble cool in exactly the way collectors hope for from this cycle.
Film background
Released in 1971, Stray Cat Rock: Beat ’71 is the fifth and final film in the Stray Cat Rock series, the now-iconic Nikkatsu youth-action cycle most closely associated with Meiko Kaji and the studio’s stylish turn toward counterculture cinema. By this stage, the series had fully embraced a world of drifting youth, biker gangs, speed, music, violence, and anti-authoritarian energy. Rather than feeling like a conventional crime picture, Beat ’71 plays as a sharp, fashion-conscious portrait of disaffected early-1970s Japanese youth culture, where motorcycles, group identity, and sudden eruptions of danger all carry equal weight. For collectors, it belongs to one of the most visually exciting and culturally distinctive Japanese exploitation series of the era.
Poster design
A fantastic and highly displayable Japanese design, this poster is packed with movement, attitude, and ensemble drama. The composition is anchored by a leather-clad central female figure seated in the foreground, flanked by other members of the cast in poses that suggest both cool detachment and imminent conflict. Around them are motorcycles in motion, a jeep loaded with youths, a rifle-bearing male figure, and a riot of bold typography and colour-blocking. The pink burst behind the central group gives the sheet tremendous impact, while the checkerboard border at the top adds a distinctly pop-art, youth-culture feel. It is exactly the kind of vivid, chaotic, stylish campaign image that makes Stray Cat Rock paper so collectible.
