“Poster of Poster” by Tadanori Yokoo, Original First Printing 1974, Ultra Rare, B1 Size (103 x 73 cm)
This is an original “Poster of Poster” designed by legendary Japanese graphic artist Tadanori Yokoo in August 1974. Commissioned by the Japan Poster Association, this surrealist masterwork playfully deconstructs the medium itself — a poster about posters — rendered in Yokoo’s unmistakable psychedelic style.
A true icon of 1970s Japanese avant-garde design, the composition features silhouetted human figures forming the letters of the word "POSTER" against a crimson dusk horizon, while the word "OF" flutters among a constellation of tiny butterflies. Minimalist yet mysterious, playful yet precise, it is a brilliant example of Yokoo’s ability to blend fine art, graphic design, and philosophical provocation.
This poster is extremely rare, especially in this B1 format and in such excellent condition. Few have surfaced on the open market in the past decade, and fewer still in unrestored, untrimmed state.
Tadanori Yokoo is one of the most influential graphic designers of the 20th century — often called the “Japanese Warhol.” His posters are collected by major institutions worldwide, including MoMA, the V&A, and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
This piece is nearly 50 years old and remains a cornerstone of Japanese poster art.
