FLUSH CONCERT 2 (Seibu Theater) (1974)

An original 1974 poster for one of the most visually explosive moments in early-1970s Japanese rock culture. Billed across the top with “I LOVE ROCK’N ROLL MUSIC – JOHN LENNON,” this unforgettable Yokoo composition combines a cosmic violet sky, surreal mountains, pink waterfalls, and a tiger-headed white beast into a spectacular psychedelic concert image. The side panels name multiple acts from the Japanese rock scene of the period, giving the piece exceptional crossover appeal as music memorabilia, graphic design, and postwar Japanese pop culture.

One of Japan’s most famous graphic designers — the legendary Tadanori Yokoo.

Yokoo is one of the defining figures of postwar Japanese graphic design. MoMA records a long exhibition history for his work, including Word and Image in 1968 and the solo exhibition Graphics by Tadanori Yokoo in 1972; Yokoo’s own official profile notes that 15 posters entered MoMA’s collection in 1967. His poster art is celebrated for fusing Japanese imagery, surrealism, satire, and bold pop graphics into a visual language that changed the history of modern poster design.
