“Mutant Turtles” (ミュータント・タートルズ), Ultra‑Rare Original Japanese B1 Movie Poster 1990, B1 Size (c. 72 × 103 cm)
This is an original Japanese B1 poster for the first live‑action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film (1990), the independent comic‑book adaptation that became an unexpected global smash and one of the highest‑grossing independent films of all time.
Design & cult status
The artwork captures the tone of the movie perfectly: a canyon of New York skyscrapers at dusk, glowing windows framing a sewer manhole in the foreground from which the four Turtles peek out—Michelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello and Raphael—eyes wide and grinning, one hand already pushing the lid aside to leap into action. At the top, the stylised MUTANT TURTLES logo sits over Japanese copy, including the speech‑bubble catchphrase 「合言葉はカワバンガ!」 (“The password is ‘Cowabunga!’”), the exclamation that helped lodge the Turtles firmly in 1990s pop culture.
In Japan as elsewhere, the film’s mix of rubber‑suit martial arts, comic‑book humour and hip‑hop attitude made it a cult favourite, spawning sequels, video games and a lasting multimedia franchise. The large‑format B1 is particularly scarce compared with the more common B2 size—this is the first example we have had in our gallery.
