“The Great Waltz” (美しく青きドナウ), Original Japanese B2 Movie Poster, 1973, c. 51 × 73 cm — T26

An original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1973 Japanese release of The Great Waltz, presented under the title 美しく青きドナウ (The Beautiful Blue Danube). Its romantic imagery, decorative borders and sweeping blue lettering make this an attractive example of Japanese musical-film advertising from the early 1970s.

Released internationally in 1972, the film was written, produced and directed by Andrew L. Stone. It celebrates the life and music of Johann Strauss II, with Horst Buchholz as the composer and Mary Costa as Henrietta, supported by Rossano Brazzi, Nigel Patrick and Yvonne Mitchell.

The design centres on an embracing couple beside the water, framed by flowering branches and a grand building beyond. Their pale period costumes extend into the lower portion of the composition, while ornamental gold-brown borders give the poster a suitably elaborate setting. A smaller vignette shows Strauss playing the violin beside Henrietta.

The large blue Japanese title sweeps across the foot of the sheet, complemented by the English title in pink. The Japanese promotional copy evokes a beautiful waltz born from a pure love blossoming beside the Danube. MGM branding and the Panavision credit complete the design.
