“The Hard Way” / 「ハード・ウェイ」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 1991, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) A268

Sale price $110.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the Japanese release of The Hard Way / 「ハード・ウェイ」, John Badham’s 1991 buddy-cop action comedy starring Michael J. Fox and James Woods.

Combining sharp comedy, action, and a playful satire of Hollywood stardom, The Hard Way is driven by the deliberately mismatched chemistry between Fox’s enthusiastic movie star and Woods’s permanently irritated New York detective.

Film background

Nick Lang is a successful but pampered Hollywood action star determined to prove that he can play a serious dramatic role. Hoping to gain authentic experience, he arranges to accompany veteran New York homicide detective John Moss during an active investigation.

Moss is already under pressure while pursuing a violent serial killer and has no patience for Lang’s constant questions, acting exercises, and attempts to imitate real police work. Their increasingly chaotic partnership blurs the line between movie fantasy and genuine danger.

Directed by John Badham, the film was written by Lem Dobbs and Michael Kozoll. It stars Michael J. Fox, James Woods, Stephen Lang, Annabella Sciorra, Delroy Lindo, and Luis Guzmán.

The film remains a highly entertaining example of the early-1990s buddy-cop genre, particularly admired for the frantic comic contrast between its two leads and its knowing treatment of Hollywood action-movie conventions.

Poster design

The poster uses a bright, exaggerated collage centred on a large portrait of Michael J. Fox, wearing black sunglasses and holding a revolver beside his face. Rather than firing a bullet, the gun produces a colourful toy flag bearing the word “BANG”, immediately establishing the film’s combination of action and comedy.

At lower left, James Woods appears as the hardened real-life detective, gripping an actual pistol and staring outward with a far more serious expression. Behind him, the Manhattan skyline rises above the water, with the World Trade Center towers clearly visible.

The vertical red text at upper right reads:

「マイケル・J・フォックス最新作!」

“The latest film from Michael J. Fox!”

The larger vertical text on the left reads:

「『バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャーPART3』以来―マイケルがイメージ・チェンジをはかる人気スター役に挑戦!果たして…?」

“Since Back to the Future Part III, Michael takes on the role of a popular star attempting to change his image! Will he succeed…?”

The lower section identifies the two principal actors:

「マイケル・J・フォックス・ジェームズ・ウッズ」

Beneath their names, the Japanese title 「ハード・ウェイ」 is presented in large, sharply angled orange lettering. Its bold scale and energetic typography reinforce the film’s fast-moving action-comedy tone.
