“The Lost Continent” / 「魔獣大陸」, Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1968, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) — T147

Sale price $175.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the 1968 first Japanese release of The Lost Continent, released in Japan as 「魔獣大陸」 / Majū Tairiku.

Directed by Michael Carreras and produced by Hammer Films and Seven Arts, this British fantasy adventure opened in Japan on 28 September 1968. Its Japanese campaign presents the film as an extravagant monster spectacle, filling the sheet with enormous claws, threatening creatures and terrified human figures.

Film background

Adapted from Dennis Wheatley’s novel Uncharted Seas, The Lost Continent follows the passengers and crew of an ageing freighter carrying a dangerous cargo.

Driven off course, they become trapped in a mysterious region of the Sargasso Sea, where carnivorous seaweed and gigantic creatures threaten their survival. Their search for escape also brings them into contact with a strange society descended from Spanish conquistadors.

The principal cast includes Eric Porter, Hildegard Knef, Suzanna Leigh and Tony Beckley.

The film combines maritime adventure with grotesque creatures and an isolated world apparently untouched by time. Its elaborate monsters and physical effects place it within the imaginative fantasy side of Hammer’s output, extending beyond the Gothic castles and supernatural figures most closely associated with the studio.

Poster design

The Japanese composition concentrates on the film’s creatures, using a dense photographic montage to surround its human characters with danger.

At upper right, an enormous reddish, armoured creature with long antennae dominates the scene. A thick, jointed limb stretches diagonally across the foreground, partially enclosing a frightened man in a pale shirt.

Smaller figures and additional creatures appear in the misty upper-left background. Their reduced scale makes the monsters seem even larger, while the overlapping images create the impression of a landscape offering no safe passage.

The lower section features a blonde woman in an orange dress, hemmed in by thick, winding vegetation. Behind and beside her are further monstrous forms, including a large orange claw and a dark creature with an arched, scorpion-like tail.

The palette combines smoky grey-green backgrounds, deep black shadows and orange-red creatures, with bright lettering giving the composition an immediate visual impact.

Across the top, yellow text announces:

「FOX怪奇シリーズ・SF巨篇!」

“FOX horror series — a science-fiction spectacular!”

The vertical pink promotional copy at left reads:

「死の海に深く魔獣たちの大陸があった!恐怖と怪奇の世界に挑戦する大冒険アクション!」

“Deep in the sea of death lay a continent of monstrous beasts! A great action-adventure confronting a world of terror and the uncanny!”

The Japanese title:

「魔獣大陸」

spans the lower middle in enormous red characters with heavy black shadows. Meaning approximately “Continent of Monstrous Beasts,” the Japanese title makes the creature spectacle central to the film’s identity.

Immediately beneath it, the original English title:

“THE LOST CONTINENT”

appears in compact blue lettering.

Yellow vertical credits on the right identify the principal cast and Michael Carreras as producer and director, alongside a reference to Wheatley’s source novel. The white 「デラックスカラー」 credit advertises DeLuxe Color, while the 20th Century Fox emblem appears at the bottom left.

The result is a vivid example of Japanese monster-film advertising, bringing the film’s human peril and fantastical creatures together in a single crowded composition.
