“The Lost World: Jurassic Park”, Original Japanese Release Movie Poster 1997, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P243
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1997 for the Japanese theatrical release of The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated sequel to Jurassic Park. Rather than using a busy montage of characters and dinosaurs, this Japanese design goes for maximum impact through restraint: the iconic red-and-black Jurassic emblem, distressed like cracked stone, set against a near-black ground with a stark line of ominous red copy beneath. It is a superb, highly displayable poster from one of the defining blockbuster franchises of the 1990s.
Film background
Released in 1997, The Lost World: Jurassic Park expanded Michael Crichton’s dinosaur universe into something darker, larger, and more chaotic than the original film. Directed by Steven Spielberg, it follows the disastrous attempt to document and exploit a second island populated by cloned dinosaurs, with the result being one of the decade’s great large-scale adventure spectacles. As the sequel to Jurassic Park, it arrived with enormous global anticipation and remains a key title in the history of 1990s event cinema.
Poster design
A brilliantly effective Japanese design built around the power of the franchise logo itself. The familiar T. rex skeleton emblem is rendered with a weathered, cracked-stone texture, giving it the feel of something excavated, ancient, and dangerous. Against the deep black background, the red circle glows with tremendous force, while the Japanese title ロスト・ワールド ジュラシック・パーク sits boldly across the centre. The minimal composition is exactly what makes it work so well: it feels ominous, confident, and instantly recognisable from across the room. This is the sort of teaser-style blockbuster poster that frames exceptionally well.
