This is an original Japanese STB tatekan theatrical poster for the 1968 Japanese release of La notte è fatta per… rubare — The Night Is Made for Stealing. Nearly sixty years old, this complete two-sheet example combines a striking portrait of Catherine Spaak with colourful imagery from the film’s comic jewel-heist adventure.
Directed by Giorgio Capitani, the film stars Catherine Spaak, Philippe Leroy, Gastone Moschin, and Antonio Casagrande, with music by Piero Umiliani. Set around a supposedly impregnable safe in Monte Carlo, the story brings together rival thieves, an insurance company, and an increasingly chaotic pursuit of stolen jewels. It opened in Japan on 9 June 1968, distributed by Shochiku Eihai.
Printed on two sheets arranged vertically, the Japanese design makes particularly effective use of the tall tatekan format. Spaak’s figure extends across both sheets, from her portrait against the yellow upper background to her white shoes near the bottom. Her pale blue outfit contrasts with the surrounding yellow, purple, red, and turquoise, giving the composition a distinctive late-1960s palette.
The oversized Japanese title stretches across the top and down the right side. Smaller scenes introduce the film’s comic action, including a man suspended from a crane and three startled figures crowded inside an open safe. The original Italian title appears in contrasting yellow and pink lettering beside Spaak’s legs on the lower sheet.
The Japanese promotional copy reads:
「モンテカルロに追いつ追われつ——世界一の泥棒コンクール！」 “Chasing and being chased in Monte Carlo—the world’s greatest thieves’ competition!”
The lower margin carries the Shochiku Eihai presentation credit. Together with the Italian title and prominent Japanese lettering, these details complete an appealing theatrical design for collectors of Catherine Spaak, European crime comedies, and Japanese film advertising.
