“Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines”, Original Japanese Release Movie Poster 1965, Style B, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA59

Sale price $100.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1965 for the first Japanese release of Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines, the colourful aviation adventure-comedy directed by Ken Annakin and starring Stuart Whitman, James Fox, Sarah Miles, Alberto Sordi, Robert Morley, and Terry-Thomas. This is the highly attractive Japanese Style B design, a wonderfully graphic and displayable poster for one of the great large-scale light adventure films of the 1960s.

Film background
Released in 1965, Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines is a lavish period adventure set around the pioneering age of aviation, built around a comic international air race and a gallery of eccentric pilots, aristocrats, romantics, and daredevils. Blending spectacle, humour, and nostalgia, the film became one of the most memorable aviation entertainments of its era, with its charming celebration of early flying machines and Edwardian bravado giving it lasting appeal.

Poster design
This Japanese Style B poster is especially striking. The composition is dominated by a vast orange-gold sky, across which primitive aircraft drift in silhouette, immediately establishing the romantic, old-world aviation atmosphere of the film. The enormous red Japanese title 素晴らしきヒコーキ野郎 gives the sheet tremendous wall presence, while the lower section adds lively character portraits and comic adventure vignettes that hint at the film’s ensemble cast and playful tone. It is a superb, colourful, and highly decorative Japanese design — exactly the kind of widescreen adventure poster that looks fantastic framed.
