“Toei Manga Matsuri 1971” (東映まんがまつり / Toei Manga Matsuri), Original Japanese Release STB Festival Poster 1971, STB Size (51 × 145 cm) P227
This is an original Japanese STB tatekan poster printed in 1971 for a Toei Manga Matsuri theatrical programme. The long-running Toei Manga Matsuri series began in 1967 as a children’s omnibus cinema event, screening multiple family titles together during school holiday periods. This 1971 programme belongs to that classic early era of the festival and has the exact towering signboard presence collectors want from the format.
Film background
By the early 1970s, Toei Manga Matsuri had become one of the defining ways Japanese children encountered animation and tokusatsu on the big screen: not as a single feature, but as a packed seasonal event mixing popular characters, television tie-ins, fantasy, monsters, and superheroes. The summer 1971 programme represented here opened on 18 July 1971 and included Andersen Monogatari: Oyayubi-hime (Thumbelina), Uchū Enjin Gori Tai Spectreman, Gō Gō Kamen Rider, Mahō no Mako-chan, and Alibaba to 40-piki no Tōzoku. That range is exactly what makes these festival posters so compelling today: they are not just adverts for one title, but snapshots of an entire children’s entertainment universe at one moment in time.
Poster design
A fantastic and exuberant tatekan design, this piece is pure 1970s children’s-cinema energy. The upper section is dominated by the bold red 東映まんがまつり logo, surrounded by a riotous collage of characters: masked heroes, monsters, robots, cartoon mascots, and comic creatures all jostling for attention in a way that perfectly captures the festival spirit. The lower section is equally appealing, presenting the line-up in brightly coloured title blocks, with Thumbelina, Alibaba and the Forty Thieves, Gō Gō Kamen Rider, Uchū Enjin Gori Tai Spectreman, and Mahō no Mako-chan all given their own billing. Visually, it feels less like a conventional one-film poster and more like a miniature world of Toei children’s culture compressed into one giant vertical display sheet. For collectors, that is exactly the charm.
