This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster produced in 1991 for the first Japanese VHS rental release of Twin Peaks / 「ツイン・ピークス」 through Amuse Video and Pioneer LDC.
Advertising the release of Volumes 1–3 from 25 July 1991, the poster also references the series’ Japanese television broadcast on JSB, the satellite channel later known as WOWOW.
This is not a conventional theatrical poster, but a scarce period home-video rental display poster created during the series’ original explosion in popularity in Japan.
This poster was printed in FAR fewer quantities than the theatrical release and is very rare.
Series background
Created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, Twin Peaks begins with the discovery of high-school student Laura Palmer, whose body is found wrapped in plastic near the small logging town of Twin Peaks, Washington.
FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper arrives to assist Sheriff Harry S. Truman with the investigation. What initially appears to be a local murder inquiry gradually exposes Laura’s hidden life, the secrets of the town’s residents, and an increasingly disturbing supernatural presence within the surrounding woods.
The series combined police procedural, melodrama, surrealism, psychological horror, and eccentric comedy in a form unlike almost anything previously shown on mainstream American television.

The haunting music was composed by Angelo Badalamenti, whose score became inseparable from the series’ atmosphere.
Twin Peaks fundamentally altered expectations of television drama, demonstrating that episodic broadcasting could sustain cinematic imagery, complex serial storytelling, and an uncompromising directorial voice.
Poster design
This extraordinary Japanese design is dominated by the haunting image of Laura Palmer, her pale face enclosed beneath translucent plastic and tinted in cold blue tones.
The portrait is surrounded by thick, expressive areas of painted grey, cream, yellow, and black. The rough brushwork appears to tear open the surface of the poster, as though Laura’s image is emerging from beneath layers of paper and paint.
At lower left, an ensemble group advances towards the viewer, led by Kyle MacLachlan as Agent Dale Cooper. Their formal dark clothing resembles a funeral procession and reinforces the atmosphere of collective mourning surrounding Laura’s death.
Three small stills at lower right present further fragments from the mystery, including characters in conversation and Ronette Pulaski walking beside the railway tracks.
“At last, the mystery will be revealed—following the much-discussed original pilot, the smash-hit American television series finally arrives!”
The outermost white text promotes the series’ success at the 1991 Golden Globe Awards, including recognition for:

The Japanese title:
「ツイン・ピークス」
appears across the lower section in expressive black lettering with a pale pink shadow, accompanied by the English title:
“TWIN PEAKS”
The release announcement reads:
「第1～3巻 7・25 レンタル開始」
Translated:
“Volumes 1–3 available for rental from 25 July.”
The top-right corner carries the period Amuse Video and Pioneer LDC marks.
Rarity and significance
Original Japanese rental posters were produced as temporary promotional materials for video shops and were commonly discarded after the release period.
This example is especially desirable because it dates from the series’ first Japanese home-video campaign, incorporates distinctive custom Japanese artwork, and documents the intense early-1990s reception of Twin Peaks in Japan.
It is a compelling piece for collectors of David Lynch, cult television, Japanese home-video advertising, surrealist cinema, and 1990s graphic design.
Condition
Excellent condition. A highly attractive example retaining rich blue, grey, cream, yellow, and black tones, clear photographic imagery, and excellent overall display impact.
There are light signs of age and handling consistent with an original Japanese rental poster from this period, but overall it presents extremely well.
