“Voyage of the Damned” (さすらいの航海), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1977, Faye Dunaway / Oskar Werner / Stuart Rosenberg, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) T40

Sale price $110.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the first Japanese release of Voyage of the Damned in 1977. Directed by Stuart Rosenberg, the film opened in Japan on 27 August 1977, distributed by Nippon Herald Films.

Based on the nonfiction book by Gordon Thomas and Max Morgan-Witts, the film dramatises the tragic 1939 voyage of the MS St. Louis, carrying Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution. Refused refuge in the Americas, the passengers were forced to return to Europe.

The international ensemble includes Faye Dunaway, Oskar Werner, Max von Sydow, Malcolm McDowell, Orson Welles, James Mason, Katharine Ross and Lee Grant, with a musical score by Lalo Schifrin.

The Japanese poster combines a large cast portrait montage with a dramatic image of the ocean liner moving through deep-blue water. Oversized English lettering in cyan and green dominates the centre, complemented by the flowing pink-purple Japanese title, 「さすらいの航海」, meaning The Wandering Voyage. The crowded arrangement of faces above the isolated ship gives the composition a strong sense of uncertainty and shared fate.
