“West Side Story” (ウエスト・サイド物語), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster, 1961, Very Rare, B2 Size (c.51.5 × 72.8 cm) P120

Sale price $800.00

A spectacular first-release Japanese B2 for Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins’ West Side Story—and a very scarce Japan-market design created for the film’s original Japanese theatrical campaign. Rather than simply echoing the better-known U.S. and international poster styles, this sheet delivers a strikingly Japanese visual concept: monumental 3D katakana title lettering dominates the upper half like a piece of pop architecture suspended over New York, while the street below erupts into motion with a balletic three-figure dance formation that perfectly captures the film’s fusion of choreography, youthful bravado, and danger.

The composition is especially powerful for the way it balances movement, romance, and menace. Beneath the airborne central figures, the poster shifts into darker dramatic imagery: a fallen body in the foreground, a rushing female figure at left, a sepia gang-confrontation inset at the lower corner, and a large circular fire-escape vignette showing the lovers reaching toward one another. The result is a beautifully layered design that sells West Side Story not just as a musical, but as a modern urban tragedy charged with music, movement, and emotional intensity.

For collectors, this is a superb display piece and one of the most visually exciting Japanese posters produced for the title. The slashing pink promotional copy across the center, the cool blue English WEST SIDE STORY logo at right, and the bold left-side シネマスコープ / 総天然色 callout all give the sheet tremendous period impact. It feels unmistakably first-release, unmistakably Japanese, and unmistakably of the great studio roadshow era.

Most importantly, this example survives in the classic Japanese B2 theatrical format—c. 51.5 × 72.8 cm—the iconic display size for vintage Japanese movie posters. First-release West Side Story posters from Japan are difficult to find in any format, and unrestored B2 examples with this kind of visual presentation are especially desirable.

Date & Japanese Theatrical Release
West Side Story was released in 1961 through United Artists. This poster is an original survivor from the film’s first Japanese theatrical release, which opened in Japan on December 23, 1961—a major holiday-season engagement for one of the era’s most prestigious musical releases.

The Film & Its Place in Cinema History
Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, West Side Story is the landmark screen adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical, itself inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and reimagined in the streets of New York. With music by Leonard Bernstein, unforgettable choreography, and a groundbreaking blend of romance and street violence, the film became one of the most celebrated movie musicals ever made, winning 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Design Notes
What makes this poster so memorable is the way it compresses the entire emotional range of the film into one sheet. The giant Japanese title is treated almost like a constructed object, giving the poster immediate wall presence. The central dance pose turns the street into a stage, while the lower-right fire-escape vignette introduces the romantic core of the story. At the same time, the fallen figure and gang imagery keep the tension alive, reminding the viewer that this is not simply a musical, but a story of conflict and tragedy. It is a bold, collage-like design created specifically for the Japanese market, and far more graphically distinctive than many standard international campaign posters for the film.

United Artists, Japanese First-Run Campaign, and Key Credits
This poster carries the first-release details collectors want to see: the UNITED ARTISTS logo at the lower right with Japanese distributor credit, prominent Japanese cast billing for Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, George Chakiris, and Rita Moreno, and Japanese credit text for Robert Wise, Jerome Robbins, and Leonard Bernstein along the bottom. Everything about the layout points to a major studio prestige release tailored for Japanese audiences at the end of 1961.

Condition Report
Overall condition is excellent and unrestored. This is a beautifully preserved original paper example with strong color, excellent eye appeal, and no restoration. The reverse shows normal age toning and print show-through consistent with an original poster of this age, while the front presents exceptionally well. It remains a highly attractive, display-ready example of a very rare first-release Japanese West Side Story poster. Please review the photos carefully, as they show the exact poster being offered. This poster is over 60 years old.
