“Château en Suède” (スエーデンの城), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1964, B2 Size (51 x 73cm) ZA1171

Sale price $130.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the 1964 Japanese release of Château en Suède (スエーデンの城), the Franco-Italian comedy-drama directed by Roger Vadim. Based on the play by Françoise Sagan, author of Bonjour Tristesse, the film stars Monica Vitti, Curd Jürgens, Jean-Claude Brialy, Jean-Louis Trintignant, and Françoise Hardy.

Film background
Released in Europe in 1963 and in Japan on 28 April 1964, Château en Suède is an elegant and eccentric European ensemble drama set within an isolated Swedish castle. Adapted from Françoise Sagan’s celebrated stage play, the film combines romantic intrigue, psychological games, aristocratic decadence, and darkly playful humour. Under Roger Vadim’s direction, the material becomes a stylish 1960s art-house piece, notable for its fashionable cast and its distinctly continental atmosphere.

Poster design
A beautifully atmospheric Japanese design, dominated by a large, soft-focus image of Monica Vitti across the upper section. Her windswept hair, enigmatic expression, and near-monochrome treatment give the poster a dreamlike European art-cinema quality. At lower right, a small pink-tinted inset still shows an intimate embrace, adding a sharper note of passion and drama against the dark background.

The Japanese title スエーデンの城 is printed boldly across the lower section in large pale pink lettering, with the original French title Château en Suède placed just above. The central Japanese tagline reads: 「雪深い戦慄の城館に渦巻く妖美の愛欲!」 — roughly, “Bewitching desire swirls within a snow-covered, thrilling castle.” The poster also highlights the film’s pedigree: Françoise Sagan as source author, Roger Vadim as director, and 総天然色 / フランスコープ indicating full colour and Franscope presentation.

Rarity and significance
Original Japanese posters for 1960s European art-house cinema are increasingly difficult to find, particularly examples with such strong design and major international names. This poster is especially attractive for its combination of Monica Vitti, Roger Vadim, and Françoise Sagan — three figures closely associated with the style, sophistication, and emotional ambiguity of 1960s European cinema.

It is also a strong example of Japanese foreign-film poster design from the period: elegant, romantic, visually restrained, and marketed through atmosphere as much as plot.
