“Darling” (ダーリング), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1968, B2 Size (51 x 73cm) ZA1166
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1968 for the Japanese release of Darling (ダーリング), the acclaimed British drama directed by John Schlesinger and starring Julie Christie, Dirk Bogarde, and Laurence Harvey. The film was released in Japan on 24 February 1968, following its major international success.
Film background
Released in 1965, Darling is one of the defining films of the Swinging London era, though its treatment of that world is far more critical than celebratory. Directed by John Schlesinger and written by Frederic Raphael, the film follows Diana Scott, a beautiful and ambitious young model whose rise through London’s media and fashion circles exposes the emptiness behind glamour, status, and modern celebrity. The film was a major critical success and won three Academy Awards: Best Actress for Julie Christie, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Costume Design.
Poster design
A beautifully composed and highly atmospheric Japanese design, dominated by a large painted portrait of Julie Christie. Her face fills the poster with a calm yet distant expression, perfectly capturing the film’s mood of glamour touched by melancholy and emotional detachment. Behind her is a softly rendered riverbank landscape with a moored boat and a small couple walking at left, giving the sheet a wistful, reflective quality rather than a purely fashionable one.
The poster also prominently features three Oscar statuettes, immediately underlining the film’s prestige and award-winning status. The English title “Darling” appears at upper right in blue, while the Japanese title ダーリング is rendered boldly across the lower section in a sweeping pink-red script, giving the poster strong visual balance and excellent display appeal.
The Japanese copy at left evokes the film’s emotional tone: “On a foggy morning at London Airport, the beloved woman Darling left all alone, hiding the sadness of love in her heart…” Across the top, the campaign line presents it as “a beautiful and sad melody of love… a long-awaited masterpiece shining with Academy Awards.” This is an especially elegant example of how Japanese distributors reframed European and British prestige cinema for domestic audiences.
Rarity and significance
Original Japanese posters for major 1960s British films are increasingly difficult to find, especially examples centred on a star as iconic as Julie Christie. This poster is particularly desirable for its combination of award-season prestige, strong standalone illustration, and its clear connection to the style and mood of the late 1960s. For collectors of Julie Christie, British cinema, or Swinging London-era film paper, it is a very appealing piece.
