“Jeanne Eagels” (女ひとり), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1957, B2 Size (51 x 73cm) ZA1168
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1957 for the Japanese release of Jeanne Eagels, issued in Japan under the striking retitled name 女ひとり (Onna Hitori / “A Woman Alone”). Directed by George Sidney, the film stars Kim Novak as Jeanne Eagels, alongside Jeff Chandler, with Agnes Moorehead, Charles Drake, and Larry Gates.
Film background
Released in 1957, Jeanne Eagels is a Hollywood biographical drama based on the life of the celebrated American stage actress whose meteoric success was shadowed by emotional instability, destructive relationships, and early death. The role offered Kim Novak one of her most overtly dramatic star vehicles of the 1950s, presenting her not simply as a glamorous Columbia Pictures icon, but as a tragic and volatile figure consumed by fame and heartbreak.
For the Japanese market, the film was retitled 女ひとり rather than being sold primarily under the name Jeanne Eagels. This was a highly effective choice: instead of relying on the biographical identity of a Broadway figure little known in Japan, the campaign reframed the picture as a melodrama of loneliness, beauty, and feminine tragedy — themes that would have been immediately legible to Japanese audiences of the period.
Poster design
A bold and highly attractive Japanese design, dominated by a deep night-sky background against which two contrasting Kim Novak images are staged. At left, Jeff Chandler embraces Novak in a highly charged romantic pose, underscoring the film’s intimate emotional conflict. At right, Novak appears again in a flamboyant pink performance gown, her body arched backward in a moment that suggests both theatrical ecstasy and private collapse.
This dual-image structure is particularly effective, visually setting public glamour against personal despair. Along the lower edge, the silhouette of fairground or carnival lights evokes Jeanne Eagels’ early life in itinerant performance culture before her rise to Broadway fame. The poster also prominently carries the MEGASCOPE mark at upper right, emphasising the widescreen presentation as part of the film’s commercial appeal.
The vertical copy at left reads in effect: “Blessed with beauty and intelligence, she welcomed a joyous youth, yet broken in love, she passed away holding heartbreak within her — a sorrowful woman.” It is classic late-1950s Japanese melodrama copy, and perfectly matched to the poster’s retitling and emotional emphasis.
Rarity and significance
Original Japanese posters for 1950s Hollywood women’s dramas and biographical melodramas are increasingly difficult to find, and this example is particularly desirable for its unusual Japanese retitling, strong standalone design, and clear reliance on Kim Novak’s star persona at the height of her fame. For collectors of Kim Novak, Columbia Pictures, and beautifully designed Japanese paper from the 1950s, this is an especially compelling and displayable piece.
