“Jules and Jim” (突然炎のごとく), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster, STB Tatekan Size (51 × 145 cm) ZA1167
This is an original Japanese STB / tatekan movie poster printed for the film’s first Japanese theatrical release of Jules and Jim (Jules et Jim), François Truffaut’s landmark 1962 French New Wave masterpiece. The film stars Jeanne Moreau, Oskar Werner, and Henri Serre, and is widely regarded as one of the defining achievements of post-war European cinema.
Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Henri-Pierre Roché, Jules and Jim follows the intense and shifting emotional relationship between two friends and the enigmatic Catherine across the years surrounding the First World War. With its fluid camera movement, literary narration, emotional modernity, and unforgettable central performance by Jeanne Moreau, the film became one of the most celebrated works of the French New Wave and remains a touchstone of 1960s art cinema.
Poster design
This STB tatekan design is exceptionally elegant and highly distinctive. The upper panel is dominated by a deep black background over which the Japanese title 突然炎のごとく is rendered vertically in dramatic lime-green calligraphy, giving the poster a bold, modernist visual identity. To the right appears a smaller still of Jeanne Moreau riding a bicycle with one of her co-stars, a memorable and recognisable image from the film.
The lower panel shifts in tone to a warm sepia-pink close-up of the near-kiss between Jeanne Moreau and Oskar Werner, with the original French title JULES et JIM printed in crisp blue lettering above. At the lower right is a small silhouetted image of the trio walking together, reinforcing the film’s triangular emotional structure. The result is a refined and artful Japanese design that captures both the film’s romance and its melancholy.
About STB / Tatekan posters
STB (tatekan) posters are among the most desirable Japanese poster formats. Measuring approximately 51 × 145 cm, they were designed for cinema display and are typically formed from two B2 sheets joined vertically. Because they were produced for use rather than preservation, surviving examples are much scarcer than standard B2 posters, especially for important European art-house titles such as this.
