“Kiss Me, Stupid” (ねえ!キスしてよ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1965, B2 Size (51 x 73cm) ZA1170
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1965 for the first Japanese release of Kiss Me, Stupid (ねえ!キスしてよ), Billy Wilder’s provocative 1964 American comedy. Produced and directed by Billy Wilder, the film stars Kim Novak, Dean Martin, Ray Walston, and Felicia Farr.
Film background
Released in Japan on 27 February 1965, Kiss Me, Stupid is one of Wilder’s boldest comedies, mixing Hollywood self-parody, small-town farce, romantic jealousy, and adult innuendo. Dean Martin plays a satirical version of his own lounge-singer persona, while Kim Novak appears as Polly the Pistol, a nightclub performer whose arrival disrupts the lives and fantasies of the men around her. The film’s frank tone made it controversial on release, but it has since become an important part of Wilder’s later comic work.
Poster design
A wonderfully playful and highly period Japanese design, dominated by a full-length image of Kim Novak at right, dressed in a midriff-baring costume and black fringed skirt. Above her appears a large portrait of Dean Martin, while smaller inset images show Novak performing and additional comic scenes from the film.
The Japanese title ねえ!キスしてよ — roughly, “Hey! Kiss Me” — is written across the centre in loose, energetic red lettering, beside the original American KISS ME, STUPID lips graphic. A decorative column of coloured lip prints runs down the right edge, reinforcing the film’s flirtatious and comic marketing.
The vertical Japanese copy at left reads in effect: “Even a stubborn, gutsy Western woman is weak before a tender heart! A sex whirlwind erupts in a small town! A fresh comedy!” The upper-right text prominently credits Billy Wilder as producer and director, while Panavision is noted near the title, advertising the film’s widescreen presentation.
Rarity and significance
Original Japanese posters for Billy Wilder’s 1960s comedies are increasingly difficult to find, especially examples with such distinctive local design. This poster is particularly appealing for its bold Japanese title treatment, playful lip-print border, and strong emphasis on Kim Novak’s star image. It is a vivid example of how Japanese distributors marketed sophisticated American adult comedy to 1960s audiences.
