“Mothra 2: The Battle Under the Sea” (モスラ2 海底の大決戦), Original Japanese Release Movie Poster 1997, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) K291A
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1997 for Mothra 2: Kaitei no Daikessen (モスラ2 海底の大決戦), released internationally as Rebirth of Mothra II. Produced by Toho, the film is the second entry in the 1990s Heisei-era Mothra trilogy and one of the most visually imaginative kaijū fantasy films of the decade.
Film background
Directed by Kunio Miyoshi, with special effects by Kōichi Kawakita, the film stars Megumi Kobayashi, Sayaka Yamaguchi, Aki Hano, and Hikari Mitsushima. Set around Okinawa and the southern seas, the story follows Mothra’s battle against the pollution-feeding sea monster Dagahra, while three children and the Elias sisters search for the ancient power of the sunken civilisation Nilai-Kanai.
The film is especially admired by kaijū fans for expanding Mothra’s mythology through new forms including Rainbow Mothra and Aqua Mothra, allowing the character to fight beneath the sea in one of the most fantastical entries in the wider Toho monster cycle.
Poster design
A vivid and highly atmospheric Japanese theatrical design, dominated by an underwater vision of Rainbow Mothra descending above the ancient submerged ruins of Nilai-Kanai. Shafts of light pour through the ocean from above, while the foreground is filled with coral-like structures, marine life, ruins, and mechanical debris, creating a dense fantasy world beneath the sea.
At the centre, the Japanese tagline reads:
「奇跡が起こる。命を守るために。」
“A miracle happens. To protect life.”
Beneath it appears the longer line:
「一万五千年の眠りから超古代文明<ニライ・カナイ>が目を覚ますとき、美しい南の海は生命の未来をかけた戦場になる。」
“When the ultra-ancient civilisation Nilai-Kanai awakens from a 15,000-year sleep, the beautiful southern sea becomes a battlefield upon which the future of life depends.”
The bold metallic-gold title モスラ2 海底の大決戦 across the bottom gives the sheet strong theatrical impact. The design is richly coloured, highly detailed, and very much in keeping with the fantasy-adventure tone of the Heisei Mothra series.
Collector significance
Original Japanese posters for the Heisei Mothra trilogy are increasingly collectible, particularly examples with strong creature imagery and major display presence. This poster is especially appealing because it captures Mothra 2 at its most fantastical and ambitious: an underwater kaijū myth built around ancient ruins, environmental conflict, and Mothra’s transformation into new elemental forms.
For collectors of Mothra, Toho kaijū cinema, 1990s Japanese fantasy film, and original monster movie posters, this is a highly attractive example.
