“Shibire Kurage” (しびれくらげ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1970, STB Tatekan Size (51 × 145 cm) B122A

Sale price $125.00

This is an original Japanese STB (tatekan) movie poster printed in 1970 for the first-release theatrical campaign of Shibire Kurage (しびれくらげ), released internationally as The Hot Little Girl. Directed by Yasuzō Masumura and written by Aihiro Ishimatsu and Masumura, the film stars Mari Atsumi as Midori, with Ryō Tamura, Ryōichi Tamagawa, and a supporting cast drawn from the period’s crime and youth-cinema world.

Film background
Released in 1970, Shibire Kurage belongs to the late-1960s / early-1970s wave of Japanese erotic crime melodrama, a field in which Yasuzō Masumura was able to combine commercial sensuality with his characteristic visual control and psychological intensity. The story follows a young go-go dancer who becomes entangled with gangsters, desire, and violence, placing the film within the darker end of pop-oriented studio filmmaking of the period. Masumura’s work from these years remains highly regarded for its bold treatment of gender, spectacle, and moral instability.

Poster design
This is a superb and highly arresting STB design, using the tall signboard format to great effect. The upper section is dominated by a large, sensual image of Mari Atsumi reclining and looking directly out at the viewer, dressed in pale pink lingerie against a soft, pale blue ground. The image is both graphic and cinematic, immediately commanding attention from a distance — precisely the purpose of the tatekan format.

Running vertically down the right side is the bold red brushed title しびれくらげ, with smaller blue text identifying the film as a colour production. Below, the lower section introduces a vertical montage of male characters from the film, balancing the glamour of the main image with the intrigue and tension of the crime narrative. To the left of this montage, vivid vertical copy reads: 「瞳!」「体!」「唇!」 — “Eyes!”, “Body!”, “Lips!” — followed by the sensational line promising Mari’s “electric shock” impact. The top-right distributor mark for Dainichi Eihai and the upper-left credit block naming Yasuzō Masumura further anchor the poster in its original theatrical context.

About STB / Tatekan posters
STBs (tatekans) are tall Japanese cinema signboard posters, typically measuring around 51 × 145 cm, and usually formed from two stacked B2 sheets. They were designed for display in theatre signboards and exterior units, prioritising visibility over survival. As a result, original STBs are far scarcer than standard B2 posters, and strong surviving examples are especially prized by collectors today.
