“The Sound of Music” (サウンド・オブ・ミュージック), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1965, Very Rare, B1 Size (c.73 x 103cm) LA34
This is an original Japanese B1 theatrical poster printed in 1965 for the first Japanese release of The Sound of Music (サウンド・オブ・ミュージック), Robert Wise’s landmark musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Based on the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical, the film became one of the most beloved and commercially successful musicals in cinema history.
Film background
Released in 1965, The Sound of Music follows Maria, a young novice who becomes governess to the von Trapp children in Austria before the Second World War. Directed by Robert Wise, with music and lyrics by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, the film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Poster design
A beautiful large-format Japanese B1 design, dominated by the iconic image of Julie Andrews with the von Trapp children running across a green Alpine meadow against a dramatic mountain backdrop. The composition captures the film’s sense of openness, optimism, music, and landscape, with the bold red Japanese title サウンド・オブ・ミュージック printed across the mountains.
The right-side panel is especially attractive, advertising the film’s 70mm TODD-AO presentation, with a small illustrated The Sound of Music logo above and a portrait inset of Christopher Plummer below. The upper Japanese copy reads in effect: “The sun shines, the greenery grows… a hymn of happiness and emotion spreading into the great sky.” It is a superb example of how Japan promoted prestige Hollywood musicals in the 1960s.
Rarity and significance
This is the very rare Japanese B1 format, measuring approximately 73 × 103 cm, substantially larger than the standard Japanese B2 poster. B1 posters were produced and preserved in much smaller numbers, and their size made them more vulnerable to handling, folding, and theatre-use wear. For a major classic such as The Sound of Music, an original Japanese first-release B1 is a highly desirable collector’s piece.
