“Sunday in New York” (ニューヨークの休日), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1964, STB Tatekan Size (51 × 145 cm) ZA1163

Sale price $185.00

This is an original Japanese STB / tatekan movie poster printed in 1964 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Sunday in New York. Directed by Peter Tewksbury, the film stars Rod Taylor, Jane Fonda, and Cliff Robertson, and remains one of the most stylish and playful American romantic comedies of the early 1960s.

Released in 1963 in the United States and in Japan the following year, Sunday in New York is a witty, urbane sex comedy set against the backdrop of Manhattan. The story follows a young woman arriving in New York and confronting questions of romance, modern morality, and independence in a tone that blends glamour, flirtation, and light social satire. The film is especially notable today for featuring Jane Fonda in one of her early screen roles, just before she became one of the defining international stars of the decade.

Poster design
This STB tatekan design is visually striking and makes excellent use of the format’s tall, architectural proportions. The upper section is dominated by a dramatic New York skyline collage, immediately establishing the urban setting. Running boldly down the right side is the Japanese title ニューヨークの休日, rendered in oversized red lettering with white outline, giving the poster a powerful graphic impact.

At centre left appears a cut-out image of Cliff Robertson holding a telephone receiver, while above him Jane Fonda is shown in motion, dressed in a green top and pale skirt, adding a stylish note of movement and comedy. The lower section is anchored by a large, humorous embrace between Jane Fonda and Rod Taylor, with Taylor’s exaggerated expression reinforcing the film’s playful romantic tone.

Additional text elements heighten the period charm: the orange vertical catchphrase promotes the picture as a cheeky adult comedy, while the inset box highlights “総天然色 メトロスコープ” (“Full Natural Color / MetroScope”). The cast billing, director credit, and music credit for Peter Nero complete the design, with the MGM mark at the bottom.

About STB / Tatekan posters
STB (tatekan) posters are among the most distinctive Japanese poster formats. Measuring approximately 51 × 145 cm, they were produced as tall cinema signboard posters, usually formed from two joined B2 sheets. Because they were made for display rather than preservation, surviving examples are far scarcer than standard B2 posters, particularly for desirable Western film titles from the 1960s.
