Sale price $300.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the Japanese release of The Game Is Over (獲物の分け前), the 1966 French-Italian drama originally titled La Curée. Directed by Roger Vadim, the film stars Jane Fonda, Peter McEnery, and Michel Piccoli.

Film background
Released during Jane Fonda’s important European period, The Game Is Over is a stylish romantic drama adapted from Émile Zola’s novel La Curée. Directed by Roger Vadim, who was then married to Fonda, the film explores desire, wealth, emotional corruption, and romantic disillusionment. Its blend of sensuality, melodrama, and high-fashion 1960s European style made it especially suited to the Japanese art-house and foreign-film market of the period.

Poster design
A beautiful and distinctively Japanese design, built around a soft, ethereal image of Jane Fonda behind a translucent veil, giving the poster a dreamlike and sensual atmosphere. At right, a circular inset shows Fonda and Peter McEnery in an intimate close-up, while the smaller lower-left scene introduces a more dramatic narrative element.

The vertical Japanese copy at upper right reads: 「恋に歓び、恋に涙して……愛することの哀しさを美しくうたいあげた心の詩」 — roughly, “Joy in love, tears in love… a poem of the heart that beautifully sings of the sadness of loving.” This poetic text gives the poster a strongly romantic and melancholic tone.

The Japanese title 獲物の分け前 is rendered across the lower section in expressive teal brush-style lettering, visually suggesting fracture, longing, and emotional tension. Compared with many Western posters for the film, this Japanese B2 has a softer, more lyrical character, emphasising Fonda’s beauty and the film’s tragic romantic atmosphere.

Rarity and significance
Original Japanese posters for 1960s European art-house and romantic drama films are increasingly difficult to find, particularly examples featuring major international stars such as Jane Fonda. This Japanese design is especially appealing for its elegant montage composition, period typography, and distinctive treatment of the film as a sophisticated romantic tragedy.
