This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster, printed in 1978 as part of a Coca-Cola campaign tied to the release of Star Wars in Japan. This extraordinary cross-brand collaboration is one of the most visually striking and historically significant paper items from the film’s earliest worldwide marketing era.
Produced exclusively for the Japanese market, this poster was never available for retail sale — it was issued for a short-lived giveaway promotion, encouraging fans to collect and send in bottle caps from Coca-Cola, Fanta, and Sprite to enter prize draws. The promotion offered coveted prizes such as an R2-D2 radio and official Star Wars T-shirts, and the design perfectly captures the moment where late-1970s Japanese advertising met global cinema: Luke Skywalker dominates the composition, framed by iconic character “cameos” presented like bottle-cap inserts, with bold Coca-Cola branding and vivid, space-themed colour.
The B2 format is particularly desirable for display and is extremely hard to find for this campaign — and this is the first time we have ever had this design in true B2 size in our gallery.
Provenance
Sourced from a top private collection of Star Wars tie-up / promotional memorabilia, this poster last changed hands in 1994 and has been kept in immaculate condition ever since — stored rolled and protected in a plastic sleeve, preserving the poster’s colour and overall presentation to an exceptional standard.
This piece is ultra rare, with very few examples known to surface publicly, and even fewer surviving in this level of condition.
Offered here in mint / near mint, excellent unrestored condition — no linen backing, no touch-ups, and no conservation work. The colours remain bright and saturated, the paper presents beautifully, and the overall display impact is outstanding.
Nearly 50 years old, this poster stands as a time capsule from the original Star Wars era — a uniquely Japanese artefact from the galaxy’s first collision with the world of soft-drink promotions.
