“Kiki’s Delivery Service” (魔女の宅急便) Original Japanese Tokuma Shoten promotional poster, B2 Size approx. 51 × 73 cm) Q19
This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster for Kiki’s Delivery Service (魔女の宅急便), the beloved 1989 Studio Ghibli film based on Eiko Kadono’s novel. Studio Ghibli’s official filmography records the film’s Japanese release as 29 July 1989, with Hayao Miyazaki credited as producer, screenwriter, and director, Joe Hisaishi for music, and principal voice cast including Minami Takayama, Rei Sakuma, Kappei Yamaguchi, and Keiko Toda.
This example is an official Tokuma Shoten promotional issue rather than a cinema poster. That conclusion is supported by the printed Tokuma Shoten “C” seal on the reverse, the copyright line © 角野栄子・二馬力・徳間書店, and the absence of theatrical billing. It is therefore best described as an original licensed Japanese promotional poster from the period of release or shortly thereafter, which is an important distinction for collectors.
The design is particularly attractive. It presents Kiki and Jiji seated on the broom against one of the film’s European-inspired cityscapes, with the oversized golden shop sign behind them creating a striking compositional frame. Compared with the more widely seen theatrical imagery, this poster feels cleaner, quieter, and more design-led, making it especially appealing as a piece of Studio Ghibli wall art. The simplicity of the image also captures what makes the film so enduring: its warmth, independence, and sense of youthful possibility.
Kiki’s Delivery Service remains one of Miyazaki’s defining early masterpieces: a coming-of-age story about work, loneliness, confidence, and self-discovery. It has long been one of the most admired titles in the Ghibli canon, and original Japanese paper connected to the film remains highly sought after.
Condition
Excellent condition. The poster presents very well overall, with strong colour, clean paper, and excellent display appeal. There is light age and handling wear, including a small chip/tear at the lower left corner, a tiny nick at the lower right edge, and very minor signs of handling visible on the reverse. These are modest flaws only, and the poster remains a highly displayable original example. Please study the photographs carefully, as they show the exact poster for sale.
A beautiful and uncommon original Tokuma Shoten Kiki poster, especially desirable for collectors of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, and period Japanese anime promotional paper.
