“My Neighbour Totoro” (となりのトトロ), Original Japanese Video Release Promotional Poster 1997, Speed Size (26 × 74 cm) P139

Sale price $200.00

This is an original Japanese “speed”-size promotional poster produced circa 1997 to advertise the home video (ビデオ) release of My Neighbour Totoro (となりのトトロ), Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved Studio Ghibli masterpiece. This is not a theatrical movie poster—it is a retail/home-video campaign poster, created to promote the video release and in-store display, in the distinctive tall, narrow format used for high-visibility point-of-sale placements.

Film background
First released in 1988, My Neighbour Totoro became one of the most important animated films ever made—an extraordinary celebration of childhood, nature, and quiet wonder, centered on two sisters who encounter gentle forest spirits during a summer in rural Japan. Over time, Totoro evolved into a global icon and the enduring symbol of Studio Ghibli itself.

Poster design
A superb, instantly recognisable image-led design built around the film’s most iconic scene: Totoro standing in the rain beside Satsuki under an umbrella at the bus stop—one of the defining visuals of Japanese animation. The poster is packed with period retail copy, including “ジブリがいっぱい COLLECTION 1” at the top and the bold announcement “ついに新価格でビデオ登場!!” (“Finally, the video arrives at a new price!!”). The large price burst reads 新価格 ¥4,500 (税抜), and the bottom line states ビデオで 6月27日 新発売 (“On video—New release June 27”). It’s a wonderful piece of 1990s Ghibli home-video marketing, and far scarcer than standard theatrical posters due to its short-lived in-store use.
