Original Japanese Tatsuya Nakadai Movie Posters
Tatsuya Nakadai (仲代達矢, born 1932) is one of the most distinguished actors in the history of Japanese cinema, celebrated for his extraordinary range, commanding screen presence and collaborations with some of Japan's greatest filmmakers. His remarkable career includes landmark performances in Masaki Kobayashi's The Human Condition trilogy (1959–1961), Harakiri (1962) and Samurai Rebellion (1967), Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo (1961), Sanjuro (1962), Kagemusha (1980) and Ran (1985), and Kihachi Okamoto's The Sword of Doom (1966).
The Tatsuya Nakadai collection is one of the most important areas of Japan Poster Shop's inventory, bringing together an extensive selection of original Japanese theatrical posters spanning his celebrated career. Particular highlights include exceptionally rare first-release posters for Harakiri, The Sword of Doom, Yojimbo and other defining works of postwar Japanese cinema.
Among the most significant pieces in our collection is an extraordinarily rare original Japanese double-B0 theatrical billboard for Harakiri, representing the monumental scale of Japanese cinema advertising at its most ambitious. Our holdings extend across numerous formats, from standard B2 theatrical posters and scarce STB Tatekan vertical posters to large B0 sheets and exceptional billboard-sized examples. These larger formats were produced for prominent theatrical displays, and surviving original examples are particularly difficult to acquire.
Japanese first-release posters for Nakadai's most celebrated films are prized for their historical significance, striking period photography, expressive typography and dramatic compositions. Posters associated with the masterpieces of Kobayashi, Kurosawa and Okamoto are especially sought after, with important early examples increasingly scarce in strong display condition.
Alongside rare, museum-quality first-release posters, our collection also includes original theatrical reissues and posters from Nakadai's later career, offering collectors a broad selection across different formats and price points. Together, these works document the extraordinary contribution of one of Japan's most important screen actors and the rich visual history of Japanese theatrical advertising.
Each poster is individually sourced and catalogued in Japan, with careful attention to authenticity, release history, condition and rarity.
