“Akira”, Original Dutch Release Movie Poster c. 1990, Size (68 × 99 cm)

Sale price $850.00

This is an original Dutch theatrical release poster printed c. 1990 for Akira, Katsuhiro Otomo’s landmark animated science-fiction film. This poster was issued for the film’s release in the Netherlands by Meteor Film / Film Freak Productions BV, with the lower copyright and distributor text identifying it as a period European release poster rather than a later decorative reprint.

Film background
Released in Japan in 1988, Akira is one of the most important animated films of the late twentieth century. Directed by Katsuhiro Otomo and adapted from his manga of the same name, the film follows Kaneda, Tetsuo, and a violent youth-biker subculture in the dystopian city of Neo-Tokyo. Its fusion of cyberpunk design, political paranoia, body horror, and extraordinary hand-drawn animation helped introduce global audiences to the full artistic and cinematic power of Japanese anime.

Poster design
A powerful European release design featuring Kaneda standing defiantly with his laser rifle, set against the industrial architecture of Neo-Tokyo. The composition is anchored by the enormous red AKIRA title across the lower half, one of the most recognisable title treatments in modern animation history.

Behind Kaneda, the shadowy mechanical forms and cityscape create a heavy dystopian atmosphere, while the orange jacket and red title give the image its immediate graphic force. The lower margin carries the Meteor Film logo and printed copyright / distribution text for Film Freak Productions BV, Zoetermeer, Netherlands, confirming its original Dutch release context.

Rarity and significance
Original European release posters for Akira are increasingly sought after, particularly early examples connected to the film’s first theatrical circulation outside Japan. This Dutch issue is especially appealing because it uses the same iconic Kaneda design associated with the Japanese campaign, but is printed at a substantially larger scale than the standard Japanese B2 format. At approximately 68 × 99 cm, it has far greater wall presence than a Japanese B2 poster, which typically measures around 51 × 73 cm.

For collectors, this gives the Dutch poster a particular advantage: it preserves one of the most important images in anime poster history while presenting it in a larger, more imposing display format. For collectors of anime, cyberpunk cinema, Katsuhiro Otomo, and early international Akira material, this is a highly displayable and historically important poster.
