Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1978 for the Japanese re-release of The Silence (Tystnaden), Ingmar Bergman’s landmark 1963 Swedish drama starring Ingrid Thulin and Gunnel Lindblom. One of the most provocative and psychologically intense films of Bergman’s career, it remains a defining work of post-war European art cinema.

Film background
Released in 1963, The Silence follows two sisters travelling with a young boy through a fictional Central European country poised on the edge of conflict. The younger sister is sensual and restless; the elder is intellectually severe and seriously ill. Trapped in a hotel amid oppressive heat, unfamiliar language, and political unease, their relationship deteriorates into a tense battle of dependence, resentment, and desire. The film is widely discussed for its bold treatment of sexuality and alienation, and for Bergman’s masterful use of silence, sound, and psychological space.

Poster design
A powerful, confrontational Japanese design built around a high-contrast black-and-white photographic image—raw, intimate, and emotionally charged—perfectly matching the film’s themes of desire, cruelty, and emotional exposure. Across the bottom, the title 沈黙 is rendered in huge, expressive brush-calligraphy, giving the poster an unmistakable Japanese graphic identity. The 完全版 (“complete version”) callout signals this 1978 re-release presentation, while the minimal layout and stark imagery create an unusually modern, gallery-like presence—one of the most striking Japanese Bergman posters of the era.
