Sale price $200.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the first Japanese release of A Caprice of Darling Caroline (浮気なカロリーヌ), Jean Devaivre’s 1953 French historical comedy starring the iconic Martine Carol. The film was released in Japan on 2 December 1953 (often playing into early 1954), distributed locally by 新外映.

Film background
Released in France in 1953, this film is the sequel to the 1951 hit Darling Caroline (Caroline chérie), and is based on Jacques Laurent’s novel. Set against a Napoleonic-era backdrop, it blends romance, comic intrigue, and swashbuckling misadventure—built above all around Martine Carol’s star persona at the height of her 1950s fame. Notably, it was one of the first French films shot in Technicolor, giving it the kind of lavish period colour that Japanese distributors loved to sell as “grand spectacle” entertainment.

Poster design
An absolute show-stopper of mid-century Japanese export-film marketing: a lush glamour montage dominated by Martine Carol, with multiple portraits and period vignettes (swordplay, uniforms, romance) arranged to maximise “continental” allure. The huge red Japanese title 浮気なカロリーヌ crowns the sheet, while the poster leans into classic era taglines—promising worldwide excitement and luxury—alongside bold “総天然色” (“full colour”) emphasis. With Pathé branding and Japanese distribution crediting, it’s a highly displayable and genuinely scarce B2 for collectors of 1950s European cinema and Japanese graphic design.
