“A Man and a Woman” / “Un homme et une femme” (男と女), Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1973, Rare STB Tatekan Size 20 × 57 in / 51 × 145 cm B274
This is an original Japanese STB / tatekan theatrical poster printed for the 1973 Japanese re-release of A Man and a Woman (Un homme et une femme / 男と女), Claude Lelouch’s defining romantic masterpiece starring Anouk Aimée and Jean-Louis Trintignant, with music by Francis Lai.
Originally released in 1966, the film became one of the most celebrated European romances of the decade, admired for its elegant structure, poetic visual style, emotional restraint, and unforgettable theme music.
This large-format Japanese STB / tatekan poster measures approximately 51 × 145 cm and was designed as a tall cinema signboard. Surviving examples in strong condition are considerably scarcer than standard B2 posters.
Film background
Directed by Claude Lelouch, A Man and a Woman follows the delicate relationship between a widow and a widower whose lives intersect through their children’s school. The film moves between memory, attraction, hesitation, grief, and renewed emotional possibility, all set against the distinctive atmosphere of Deauville, winter roads, racing sequences, and Francis Lai’s now-iconic score.
The film won major international recognition, including the Cannes top prize and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, becoming one of the emblematic imported romances of the post-war era.
Poster design
This Japanese STB is an exceptionally elegant two-panel design. The upper section is dominated by a large, soft-focus close-up of Anouk Aimée and Jean-Louis Trintignant in an intimate embrace. The image is warm, grainy, and dreamlike, perfectly matching the film’s romantic melancholy.
The lower section shifts into a refined Deauville montage: winter boardwalk imagery, the distant Eiffel Tower, Jean-Louis in a dark coat, Anne in her sheepskin jacket, a smaller image of the couple walking together, and racing imagery along the bottom edge. The design beautifully captures the film’s movement between romance, memory, distance, and speed.
The title 男と女 is rendered in a striking two-colour arrangement: 男 in deep blue and 女 in vivid pink, visually separating and balancing the film’s central emotional pairing. Between the Japanese characters, the original French title un homme et une femme is retained, giving the poster a refined bilingual identity.
The right-side vertical copy reads:
「男と女の心を描いて永遠に心ゆるがすロマンのメロディ!ルルーシュ=レイの最高傑作をあなたの青春に捧げます」
A natural rendering is:
“A melody of romance that depicts the hearts of a man and a woman and moves the soul forever. We dedicate Lelouch and Lai’s masterpiece to your youth.”
The green horizontal copy reads:
「新しい感覚がとらえた愛の色彩美に陶酔して下さい」
A natural rendering is:
“Please be intoxicated by the beautiful colours of love captured with a new sensibility.”
The left-side awards text highlights the film’s major international recognition, including its Cannes and Academy Award success.
About STB Tatekan posters
STB / tatekan posters were tall Japanese cinema signboard posters made from two stacked B2 sheets, designed for theatre-front display and free-standing promotional boards. Measuring approximately 51 × 145 cm, they have far greater presence than a standard B2 poster and were produced for visibility rather than permanence.
Because many were displayed, folded, handled, pasted, or discarded, surviving STB posters are now highly prized by collectors, especially for major international art-house titles.
