“A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child” (エルム街の悪夢5 ザ・ドリームチャイルド), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1990, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O520
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1990 for the first Japanese theatrical release of A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (エルム街の悪夢5 ザ・ドリームチャイルド), directed by Stephen Hopkins and distributed in Japan by Gaga Communications for New Line Cinema.
The film is the fifth entry in the Nightmare on Elm Street series, continuing the story of Alice Johnson as she faces Freddy Krueger’s attempt to be reborn through her unborn child.
Film background
Set shortly after The Dream Master, the film finds Alice enjoying a brief respite from Freddy’s attacks until her nightmares return during pregnancy. Freddy uses the dreams of the foetus as a gateway, once again slaughtering Alice’s friends while trying to secure a permanent foothold in the real world. Visually ambitious and gothic‑tinged, The Dream Child leans into surreal, expressionistic dreamscapes and grotesque practical effects, expanding on Freddy’s twisted backstory.
Poster design
The Japanese B2 features a large painted image of Freddy Krueger on the right, lit in sickly oranges and yellows against a stark purple backdrop, one clawed glove held to his lips in a mock “shushing” gesture. On the left, an organic, almost womb‑like mass unfurls into a demonic pram shape, hinting at the film’s pregnancy theme and the “Freddy Jr.” tagline referenced in the Japanese copy. The blue title 「エルム街の悪夢5」 is stacked above the vivid red subtitle 「ザ・ドリームチャイルド」, while a tiny cartoon‑style Freddy crouches at the bottom edge, adding a touch of dark humour. Clean composition and bold colours make this one of the more graphically stylish entries in the Japanese Elm Street poster run.
