“A Place for Lovers” / 「恋人たちの場所」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 1968, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA1062

Sale price $120.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the Japanese release of A Place for Lovers / 「恋人たちの場所」, the romantic melodrama directed by Vittorio De Sica and starring Faye Dunaway and Marcello Mastroianni.

A visually elegant and emotionally charged late-1960s romance, A Place for Lovers blends European fashion sensibility, melancholic glamour, and sweeping alpine scenery. This Japanese poster is especially attractive, with its poetic layout, soft romantic palette, and beautifully balanced combination of portraiture and landscape imagery.

Film background
Released in 1968, A Place for Lovers tells the story of a gravely ill young woman who escapes into a final holiday near the Italian Alps, where she meets a charismatic Italian engineer. Their brief relationship develops into an intense romance shadowed by the knowledge that time is limited.

The film was directed by Vittorio De Sica, from a screenplay credited to Cesare Zavattini, Tonino Guerra, Peter Baldwin, Ennio De Concini, and Julian Halevy. The principal cast is led by Faye Dunaway and Marcello Mastroianni.

Although the film drew sharply divided responses upon release, it has continued to attract interest for its lush cinematography, stylish period atmosphere, and the unusual pairing of two major international stars under the direction of one of Italy’s most important filmmakers.

Poster design
The Japanese poster uses a dreamlike and highly elegant composition. The lower half is dominated by a large, softly rendered close-up portrait of Faye Dunaway, shown in a reflective, melancholic pose against a pale green background. Her windblown hair and distant expression give the image an unmistakably fragile, romantic mood.

The upper section presents a scenic alpine setting, with a view of the Dolomites in the distance. Beneath this landscape, Faye Dunaway and Marcello Mastroianni are shown walking together along a road, with a small car visible nearby, suggesting the fleeting intimacy of their encounter.

The principal Japanese tagline reads:

「アルプスの花のように—激しくもはかなく 恋のいのちが燃えあがる!」
“Like an Alpine flower—intensely yet fleetingly, the life of love blazes up!”

The title 「恋人たちの場所」 is printed prominently in a bold dark blue script, flanked at both sides by delicate purple floral illustrations, which lend the poster a lyrical and decorative quality. Beneath the title appears the English billing: “MARCELLO MASTROIANNI and FAYE DUNAWAY in A PLACE FOR LOVERS.” Additional production credits are neatly centred below in smaller black text.

The overall design is poetic, refined, and highly evocative of late-1960s Japanese poster art for imported European and American romantic cinema.
