“Ah! Les belles bacchantes!” (裸の女神), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1955, B2 Format (c. 51 × 73 cm) — T121

Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1955 Japanese release of Ah! Les belles bacchantes!, presented locally as 裸の女神 (Hadaka no Megami, “The Naked Goddess”). A striking example of mid-century French comedy advertising in Japan, this colourful sheet combines theatrical glamour, comic character portraits and bold Japanese lettering.

Directed by Jean Loubignac, the 1954 French film features Robert Dhéry, Colette Brosset, Louis de Funès, Raymond Bussières and Rosine Luguet, with music by Gérard Calvi. Its backstage story follows preparations for a theatrical revue whose provocative publicity attracts police attention. An investigation into the show’s propriety soon becomes entangled with its rehearsals, providing a framework for musical performances, visual comedy and comic misunderstandings.

The poster captures that combination of spectacle and mischief through an elaborate illustrated montage. A full-length showgirl dominates the centre, wearing a pale feathered headdress, jewelled stage costume and an open, flowing cape. Her figure stands against a warm coral-orange background that gives the composition an immediately theatrical atmosphere.

Comic male portraits frame the central figure, including a top-hatted gentleman at upper left and a moustached man in a green pinstriped jacket at lower right. Smaller performers extend the revue theme: a chorus line appears across the upper section, while a dancing couple adds movement at the right. The contrast between glamorous performers and exaggerated comic expressions conveys the film’s burlesque character.

The original French title, “AH! LES BELLES BACCHANTES!”, appears across the top in dark green. Below, the enormous Japanese title 「裸の女神」 fills the lower section in deep crimson lettering edged with a pale outline. The prominent title, warm colours and densely arranged illustrations give the sheet considerable display presence.

The vertical promotional copy includes:

「お色気取締りの警察署長が 裸劇場に飛び込んだ!!」
“A police chief cracking down on indecency plunges into a nude revue theatre!”

The multicoloured wording 「総天然色大作」 promotes the film as a “major full-colour production.” Japanese cast and production credits accompany the illustrations, with the joint distribution billing for ハンセン・ベルンシュタイン商会 and 映配株式会社 printed along the bottom.

An appealing early Japanese release poster for collectors of French comedy, Louis de Funès, theatrical revue imagery and illustrated 1950s cinema advertising.

Condition: Excellent for its age. Handling creases and minor edge wear are visible, including small edge tears and nicks, with localised tape reinforcement on the reverse.
